Psychotherapist Lucas Mayrsohn, LCSW, founder and Clinical Director of Metro Psychotherapy & Counseling, joins the AIS community to discuss how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has uniquely benefited his clients who stutter.
ACT, which focuses on increasing psychological flexibility, trains the ability to stay present, open, and committed to behavior aligned with one’s values, even in the face of difficult emotions or thoughts. For individuals who stutter, psychological flexibility can be essential in managing the anxiety, shame, or frustration that often accompanies stuttering. By promoting acceptance of stuttering rather than avoidance, individuals are less likely to engage in behaviors that exacerbate the problem, such as avoiding speaking situations or engaging tense struggle behaviors.
