Intensive Stuttering Therapy Program: Results and Expectations
The most important way to assess the severity of someone's stuttering problem is to ask the individual how he/she feels about it:
- How does it impact your life?
- How limiting or handicapping is it?
- How much does it control your life?
The same kinds of questions need to be asked in order to assess success in therapy:
- Do you feel a greater sense of freedom?
- Has your self confidence improved?
- Do you feel comfortable talking to others about your speech?
- Do you feel you have the ability to effectively manage your speech?
- Do you feel more in control of your life?
Our past participants report a new sense of freedom and control and a heightened sense of self-confidence. They demonstrate new abilities to pursue what they want in life. They frequently comment at the end of the intensive. "I got much more than what I had expected." As long as the desire and commitment is there, individuals can expect to achieve significant changes in speech and how they feel about themselves, their stuttering, and their lives.
The intensive program is not a "cure-all." It is the beginning to a longer-term process. Practice of newly learned skills and attitudes leads to stronger and stronger abilities. There will be times when speech fluctuates, but the difference after therapy is that these fluency changes are understood and can be managed. We encourage our clients to view these times as opportunities to refine and further strengthen their skills and attitudes. Many tell us that their "bad" days are now like their "best" days used to be.
Follow-up and support over the long term are essential for most people. The intensive therapy is supported with a follow-up process that can take many different forms.
