Stuttering Therapy for Children
School aged children; from about age seven and older often have begun to develop attitudes and feelings about their speech difficulties. So, it is at this age level that a more direct, multi-faceted approach becomes appropriate. An evaluation is first conducted to assess the child's and family's needs. Evaluations can be made without the obligation of enrolling in treatment.
Treatment typically involves the development of speech management tools as we work toward the elimination of the fears and avoidances. We support a strengthening in the perception of self and help to empower the child to take charge and educate his/her teachers and peers. We also support the family through this process of change. We work to educate all involved in the child's life in order to develop a strong, positive and supportive environment in which the child can thrive with his new found attitudes and skills. This is accomplished through individual treatment sessions, group treatment, as well as parent/caretaker support groups. All children's evaluations and treatment are conducted by our experienced staff.
It is with this age group that the child's friends and classmates can also be enlisted as a part of the support system. As the therapist and child educate them about stuttering and its treatment, the child's peers develop a healing understanding which facilitates support. Institute specialists serve as liaisons to schools to educate school faculty as well as speech support staff.
In addition, we highly recommend getting information from the various other organizations for stuttering. The National Stuttering Association is a national self-help organization and has excellent materials available. Friends, the Association for Young People who Stutter, is a wonderful resource for support and information. And lastly, The Stuttering Homepage is a vast web site of information.
| "Isa's speech has been really, really good. I don't hear her stuttering at all. Not for months. We had a meeting with Isa's teacher a few days ago and she told us that she has never heard Isa stuttering, ever. This year Isa appears to be participating alot more in class, speaking to the group and her confidence is growing. We are thrilled with the way things are progressing and we must give you credit for this. You are so much fun in therapy, so kind and encouraging, really creating a safe environment where Isa can forget herself and focus on the tasks at hand. Your approach is so skillful and unbelievably effective. If you ever wonder about the importance of your work, know this, you have changed the course of one little girl's life. We are forever in your debt. Chamonix, you have worked wonders." Clora, mother of Isa, age 6 |
