Professional Training
We provide training to speech-language pathologists and graduate students who desire to expand their knowledge and clinical skill in working with people who stutter.
Graduate Student Internships
Clinical training of graduate students in speech-language pathology is a vital mission of the American Institute for Stuttering. We have hosted over 100 graduate interns from across the USA, Canada, and Europe. We aim to provide our interns a broad training experience in stuttering treatment with all ages, including the all-important area of pre-school early intervention.
Interested graduate students can download the application, complete it and send it to us. Call or email with any questions.
Training for Professionals
Speech-language pathologsists holding the Certificate of Clinical Competence and those in their Clinical Fellowship Year may attend AIS for an intensive period of training. There is a fee for professionals to enroll in this training.
Since the teen/adult intensive treatment model covers all aspects of the process, clinicians participate according to our intensive program schedule. There is also opportunity to learn about preschool early intervention and treating the school-aged child from our staff while here.
Interested professionals can download the application, complete it and send it to us. Call or email with any questions.
Individual Consultations
SLPs are also invited to take advantage of individual consultation/training with our staff which is charged at our hourly rate.
| "I want to thank you very much for allowing me to spend some time with you in New York. I felt I learned so much, not only about vocal fold management, but also about being a good therapist. It was a great privilege to observe you at work and I am inspired to try out different ways of working with our clients." Rachel Everard, MSc, RegMRCSLT, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist City Literary Society, London, England |
In the future we expect to offer more extensive professional training programs. These are being designed as training opportunities for the seasoned clinician who wishes to expand and develop clinical skills in fluency treatment. The Institute will offer a full range of specialized training in the treatment of stuttering to include training workshops focused on treatment for school-aged children and preschoolers.
| "The AIS intensive program is not strictly a "stuttering treatment" protocol. It is a life altering experience, focusing much on human nature and the human aspect of life itself. While part of the focus is on fluency training, much time is spent analyzing expectations, attitudes, beliefs, and assumptions. It is remarkable that this training teaches the clinicians just as much as it teaches the clients. It is a program that fosters personal development, emotional growth, and maturity. I have gained so much, on both a professional and personal level." Ruda Gliksman, graduate intern Brooklyn, New York |
