The disorder of stuttering has been one of the most seriously misunderstood of human handicapping conditions. Approximately one percent of the population of the United States, some three million Americans, suffer this inability to speak freely and try to cope with the daily agonizing struggle and ridicule that accompanies it.
The American Institute for Stuttering is dedicated to filling the serious void in the availability of quality treatment and training. Funding for the Institute comes from multiple sources including fees accrued from treatment programs and professional training, as well as private, corporate and foundation donations. Many who need treatment have limited means, thereby requiring subsidized treatment. At the Institute this is met through a sliding scale fee structure or payment plans or, for qualifying clients, with aid from resources such as: state vocational rehabilitation offices, insurance companies, and school systems.
The Institute will provide some subsidized professional training as well which will help to move us toward our goal of increasing the number of speech-language pathologists who will qualify as recognized specialists in stuttering treatment. To assist the Institute with these funding needs, additional support is being sought from foundations, corporations, and individuals. Any and all tax-deductible donations are very gratefully accepted.
