The most important way to assess the severity of someone's stuttering problem is to ask the individual how they feel about it: How does it impact your life? How limiting or handicapping is it? How much does it control your life?
The same kinds of questions need to be asked in order to assess success in treatment: Do you feel a greater sense of freedom? Has your self confidence improved?. Do you feel comfortable talking to others about your speech?.... Do you feel you have the tools to effectively manage your speech? ..Do you feel more in control of your life?. Our past participants report a new sense of freedom and control, and a heightened sense of self confidence. They demonstrate new abilities to pursue what they want in life. They frequently comment at the end of the intensive. "I got much more that what I had expected." As long as the desire and commitment is there, individuals can expect to achieve significant changes in speech management and how they feel about themselves and their lives.

The three week intensive is not a "cure-all." It is the beginning to a long term process. Once skills and attitudes are learned, they need to be practiced and strengthened. There will be times when speech management fluctuates, but the difference after treatment is that these fluency changes are understood and can be managed. We encourage our clients to view these times as opportunities to refine and further strengthen their skills and attitudes. Many tell us that their "bad" days are now like their "best" days used to be.
Follow up and support over the long term is essential for most people. The Intensive treatment is supported with a follow up process that can take many different forms. Click here to go back to Treatment Philosophy | Home | Treatment
