"Founded in 1998, The American Institute for Stuttering (AIS) is the only non-profit organization in the United States that provides state-of-the-art treatment to people who stutter, support to their families, and clinical training to professional speech pathologists. Our mission extends to advancing public and scholarly understanding of this often misunderstood disorder."

• Stuttering is a genetic and neurological disorder and is NOT caused by nerves or anxiety as most people still believe.
• Stuttering remains one of the few handicaps that people still laugh at.
• Good help and resources are available.
• The earlier the better. Early intervention treatment can prevent a lifetime of potential shame and debilitation - to reverse the course of stuttering and resolve it before it becomes chronic and "hard-wired."
