The first of the American Institute's missions is to provide universally affordable, state-of-the-art comprehensive, uplifting treatment
experiences for preschoolers, school aged children, teens and adults. Comprehensive treatment not only involves working with the
physical and psychological manifestations of stuttering but includes reaching out to families, care givers and educators through
counseling and education.
Stuttering is a complex, multidimensional disorder that requires a whole person, multi-faceted approach: physical retraining to
effectively manage the speech and vocal muscles, work to reduce the fears and eliminate the avoidances, a strengthening in the
perception of self, a development of self-management skills and a retooled approach to communicating with others. Comprehensive
treatment also includes reaching out to families and care givers through counseling and education.
Treatment for preschoolers may not be as involved as treatment for older children and adults. However, the treatment for young
children reflects the Institute's whole person philosophy through the essential involvement of parents, caretakers and teachers.
Our greatest learning from our clients over all of these years, has been that change has to take place on many different levels. As
athletes do, we work with both the body and the mind. Being whole person in nature, the treatment process involves working to
change how speech is produced and managed and also involves working with the client and families to develop new ways of thinking
and how to approach the world with new, informed and empowered attitudes.
What we care about most is that our clients and their families experience a concrete, positive and uplifting experience...one that is
life changing and one that gives them the foundation to create freedom in speech and in life.

Cristin's progress to date has been outstanding. She demonstrates a true sense of ownership and control of her speaking which
reinforces her confidence level. She has replaced anxiety about speaking with
a feeling of enjoyment. Dread has been replaced by
excitement. Without a doubt, it is the very special, supportive environment that Catherine creates which I feel results in the many
successes that
she must enjoy."
